After spending eight hundred and fifty years there it moved to Dublin, and shortly after that. It originated twelve hundred years ago, most likely in Iona, a small island between Scotland and Ireland, and was soon moved to the town of Kells in Ireland. The book was found buried in the earth but without its ornamental cover. The biggest relic of the Western World was allegedly stolen from Kells in 1006 for its exquisite cumdach (shrine). The Book of Kells is one of the most beautiful, intricate and ornate documents in existence. The manuscript was first mentioned in the Annals of Ulster. In 1661, it was presented to Trinity College, which then requested permission to keep it. ![]() The book remained in the monastery until 1654, when the manuscript was sent to Dublin for protection from Cromwell’s garrison. Trinity alumni are welcome to visit the Book of Kells & Old Library free of charge and they can bring up to 2 guests. Following the violence of the Viking invasions, the monks fled from the island to County Meath in Ireland, where they protected the Book of Kells in the monastery of Kells (hence its name). The Book of Kells is one of the most famous artefacts in the world. The Book of Kells is a 9th-century devotional text. The legendary volume is now available in new high-resolution scans for free online browsing. The Book of Kells is said to have been created by monks around 800 AD, in the monastery of Iona, on an island off the west coast of Scotland. The Book of Kells held in the library of Trinity College Dublin is a masterpiece of medieval illumination and manuscript craft. ![]()
